In "Cultural Properties in 8K: A Hands-On Look at Legendary Tea Bowls” by National Center for the Promotion of Cultural Properties*1, StockGraphy Inc. was in charge of 3D digital archive development of the important cultural property of Japan "Tenmoku tea bowl with oil-spot patterns" (China, Southern Song period owned by Kyushu National Museum) under the supervision of Kyushu National Museum, in cooperation with SHARP MARKETING JAPAN CORPORATION.
The complex changes in coloration on its surface were difficult objects to capture with optical 3D scanning technology, but we have succeeded in generating a highly accurate 3D model by combining multiple techniques.
StockGraphy has been improving its proprietary workflow, Digi:reBUILD(*2) which realizes advanced reproduction of surface materials in 3D digital archives.
In this project, we have further improved our workflow to reproduce the complex, detailed, and beautiful surface texture of "Tenmoku tea bowl with oil-spot patterns" achieving an information volume equivalent to 32K images during our development stage.
In addition, we are generating materials extracting the characteristics of " Tenmoku tea bowl with oil-spot patterns " for use in the technology*3 to reproduce "structural color," a characteristic of " Tenmoku tea bowl with oil-spot patterns " in which the color changes depending on the angle of viewpoint and the way the light hits the surface.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Adobe Inc. and Sebastien Deguy for their cooperation in this development via Substance 3D Painter.
“Cultural Properties in 8K: A Hands-On Look at Legendary Tea Bowls” is currently on view at Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum.

*1 The solution for appreciating cultural properties developed by the Independent Administrative Institution National Institutes for Cultural Heritage in collaboration with the Tokyo National Museum and SHARP CORPORATION. It was created through the Agency for Cultural Affairs' "Fiscal 2021 Regional Development Promotion Project for Cultural Assets Associated with Local Communities (Cultural Asset Content Creation Project Using Advanced Technology)" and has been on view at the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum since March 15, 2022. High-resolution images of valuable artworks, crafts, and cultural assets, which are difficult to hold in hands or observe up close, are displayed on an 8K display and can be viewed in detail by enlarging and rotating the images.
